The origins of the Metropolitan car lie in a number of experimental cars developed by the American Nash-Kelvinator Corporation to test the reaction of the public to a vehicle considerably smaller than the usual domestic American car. Several power units were tried, but it was not until 1952 that the company formulated an agreement with the Austin Motor Company. The car, built in open and closed forms, was of highly distinctive appearance with a wide "transatlantic" body on a narrow track. It naturally employed a high proportion of Austin components including the A40 engine and A30 suspension. The series III car, such as this one had the larger A50 engine.
This car is in sound running condition with an MoT expiring in October. The interior is poor, but the hood is in very good condition. There is some documentation being sold with the car including various old MoTs, bills and service manuals.
