When Jaguar unveiled their stunning E-type sports car in 1961, it offered utterly sensational looks and performance plus incredible value for money. Using a monocoque chassis centre section and tubular engine bay subframe, it derived directly from the immortal D-type which won the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race three years running.

The engine of the original 3.8-litre E-type was developed from the preceding XK150S delivering a quoted 265bhp on a 9:1 compression ratio and breathing through three SU HD8 carburettors. An enlarged 4.2-litre engine was introduced to the three year old E-type in 1964, built around a new cylinder block with altered bore spacings. Although power output remained nominally unchanged at 265bhp, torque increased to 283lb/ft. The adoption of this engine was accompanied by the introduction of a new all synchromesh gearbox and an improved servo system.

This car was purchased by the present owner two years ago after it had undergone am extremely thorough rebuild which is itemised in a long letter from the previous owner. Work included stripping the body to bare metal and repairing or replacing the panels where necessary. The whole was then resprayed. The engine, suspension, brakes, gearbox and rear axle have been completely overhauled, again with many replacement parts being fitted. Detail work even included removing the engine frames from the body, repainting them and filling with waxoil before refitting using new high tensile bolts.

The current owner has continued the restoration and spent thousands of hours fastidiously finshing the car off to the superb condition it is offered in today. Work he has carried out includes a complete re-trim in Connolly black leather with white piping, a new headlining and finishing off the window surrounds (interior) in leather rather than the original chrome strips which are available for replacement if desired. All the rubbers have been replaced, the tappets have been re- timed, a new radiator/header tank and hoses fitted and also a new wiring harness. The bumpers have been rechromed, the chrome wire wheels are new and even the fuel bowl has been overhauled! The car is in very good condition following this major work which has only just been completed and there is both the original log book as well as the V5 registration document.
