A Fine Pair Of 22-Bore Spanish Madrid-Lock Holster Pistols

With swamped two-stage barrels each retaining much of their original blued finish and with baluster moulding at the muzzle, and chiselled girdle, the breech sections octagonal then sixteen-sided, with a gold line at the rear, and struck with two gold-lined punzónes of the maker (Neue Støckel 1077, 1080) and three gold-lined decorative marks, gold-lined touch-holes, engraved tangs, signed flat locks each with moulded bevelled border and chiselled details, and engraved with rococo ornament, moulded fruitwood full stocks (minor brusing) each carved in relief at the barrel tang, iron mounts engraved en suite with the locks and including signed trigger-guards and pierced side-plates, engraved barrel bands forming the ramrod-pipe, and original ivory-tipped ramrods

Lot Essay

Francisco Targarona, a student of Francisco López, was appointed gunsmith to King Charles IV in 1792, and died during the Peninsular War (1808-14)
