SIXTUS IV (Pope, Francesco della Rovere, 1414-1484). De sanguine Christi et De potentia Dei. Edited by Johannes Philippus de Lignamine (fl. 2nd half of 15th century). Nuremberg: Friedrich Creussner, 1473.

Chancery 2° (290x213mm). Collation: [1-810.8.8.8 9-1010 1110(6, a cancel)] (1/1r blank, 1/1v editor's prologue addressed to Pope Sixtus IV, 1/2v author's dedication to Pope Paul II, 1/2r De sanguine Christi, 10/9v colophon, register, 10/10-11/1 blank, 11/2r De potentia Dei, 11/10v blank). 95 (of 98, without 3/2.7 and blank 11/1) leaves. 33 lines. Type: 1:110G. 3- to 6-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. (Tear in first and third leaves affecting two letters, two other small marginal tears, light dampstaining.) Modern vellum over pastepaper boards. Provenance: contemporary annotation in red and brown ink; later library stamp partly erased from three leaves.

Second edition, first state with the printed date 1473; other copies of this edition are known dated 1474. Sixtus IV, whose extraordinary support of the arts extended to enriching the Vatican Library and having built the Sistine Chapel, was also notoriously political, and the publication of the first edition of this book, with its dedication to Paul II on the eve of Paul's death, and his own elevation to the Papacy can be no coincidence. The blank, rather than printed, bifolium 3/2.7 in this copy apparently was present from the beginning, as attested by a contemporary note, and belongs to the same paper stock as the other sheets in the quire.
