BORGLUM'S PROPOSAL FOR MOUNT RUSHMORE: A MONUMENT TO MANIFEST DESTINY

The formal proposal, of which only a small number could have been produced by typewriter, in which the self-styled "sculptor and engineer" proposes a monumental scultural "memorial to...the continental development of the Republic, commemorating in sculptured portraits those dominating personalities who furthered its creation..." Borglum's report details his plan, his search for the ideal site, "Character of the Monument," "Sculpture" (in which he defends the inclusion of Theodore Roosevelt), "Time Necessary to Complete Work" "Character of Granite," "Engineering," and other aspects of the proposed colossal sculpture. Borglum describes the process to be used, estimates a total cost of $460,000, and estimates five years work to completion. Once approved, the project was begun in 1927, but not completed until 1941, the year of Borglum's death.
