The making of such rattan furniture featured in 18th Century sketch-books of Chinese trades, such as that illustrated M. Jourdain, Chinese Export Art, London, 1950, fig. 9; William Chambers', Designs of Chinese Buildings, 1757, also illustrated related seat furniture
The bamboo chair with 'fan' tablet back and serpentined arms relates to a pair of chairs from the collection of Morton Gary Stuart, 17th Earl of Moray (d.1930), sold Christie's New York, 9th October 1993, lot 337. A similar chair was also illustrated in E.T. Joy, English Furniture, 1977, p. 99. The design also relates to the 'India cane' models with which Queen Charlotte furnished Frogmore, Berkshire in the 1790s (see: F. Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985,
p. 203)
