Laurens left France in 1846 for Malta, Smyrna, Constantinople, and Bursa as well as Bulgaria and Moldavia. In 1847 he undertook an arduous, year-long journey to Persia, through Trebizond, Erzeroum, Tabriz, to Teheran; a journey rarely undertaken by Westerners. Enduring unbelievable hardships, little food and drink, fever, and impassable routes, he continued sketching at each stop, with drawings of landscapes and people.
