An oil sketch for the famous painting of 1865, now in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (see Gerald Ackerman, The Life and works of Jean-Léon Gérôme, London, 1986, no. 152).

Sold with a certificate of authenticity from Gerald Ackerman, dated 19 August 1994 where he states 'There are several differences in the sketch from the finished version, which makes it unlikely that this was painted after the Hamburg version. The painting technique is loose, as usual in the oil sketches by Gérôme, but the painting is quite accurate.'
