An oil sketch for a larger and more detailed painting, now lost and only known from a photogravure published by Goupil in 1883.

Sold with a certificate of authenticity from Gerald Ackerman dated 17 August 1994 where he states 'This is an especially fine sketch, typical of Gérôme's care and love of detail in his early years. It is also extremely solid in the composition, even the bundles of wheat waiting to be thrashed are carefully thought out and depicted. The colour scheme is very careful, so that the spatial relationships are all quite clear.

Gérôme usually did not sign his oil sketches in capital letters; if this signature - which looks quite good - is by him, it may be because he knew it was an especially fine sketch.'
