MENTIONING WINSTON CHURCHILL AND ARABIAN PRINCES FEISAL AND ABDULLA

Written shortly before enlisting in the RAF under the name John Hume Ross; at the time copies of the "Oxford edition" of Seven Pillars of Wisdom were still at the binders. After Lawrence had returned to England in December 1921, it was St. John Philby who replaced him as British representative in Amman, Trans-Jordan. "...We decided to invite Abdulla. Then a question arose of Feisal's coming home. Two would be too many: so Abdulla's invitation is held up pending the decision of the Irak business. I think Abdulla will win: & he will probably be asked for about Sept. 10-20: & to stay perhaps 3 weeks. [In 1921 Feisal had been crowned King of Iraq, and his brother Abdulla became ruler in Trans-Jordan.] Herbert Samuel [British diplomat] suggests first that your man [Philby] shouldn't come with him, for fear lest the province go smash meanwhile...I think that they will be asked to come together: but when & if? No one can say for the moment: but the point must be settled in the next fortnight. Winston's [Churchill] being away holds everything up..." Not in Letters, ed. D. Garnett.
