Three hand-colored engraved maps, single sheets, each 500 x 603 (Europe map 589) mm., each with decorative cartouches, the seas embellished with ships and the landmasses with animals or native figures, vignette borders consisting of 9 city views at top and 10 costume vignettes at sides, America map (state 3) with small inset map of Greenland, Latin text on versos. The maps hand-colored in outline, vignettes fully colored by a contemporary hand. (Europe map slightly creased and with repair to lower margin, not affecting image.) Separately matted and framed.

Very good copies of three of the highly decorative continental maps from the first two volumes of Blaeu's Theatrum orbis terrarum; the present copies were issued with the 1640 Latin-text edition. These single-sheet versions of Blaeu's 1608 continental wall maps were first published separately in 1617. They reappeared in atlas form in the 1631 edition of Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix, and in the 1635 and later editions of the Theatrum. Koeman, Bl 21A, map 2, and Bl 22, maps 3 and 5 (and cf.
