A PONTIC-BYZANTINE GILT BRONZE BUCKLE
circa early 6th century a.d.
Cast with a ribbed oval loop, narrowed at the back to form a rod to which the club-shaped tongue with an animal mask terminal is attached, the basal cube set with a cabochon garnet, the corners of the loop with projecting circular collars each set with a cabochon garnet, the pair at the front serving as the eye for two confronted bird heads, their hooked beaks inlaid with a flat garnet
