a rare set of eight tibetan thang.kas depicting protective deities
late 19th century
Each painting has a large central protective deity surrounded by attendants, mahasiddhas, lamas, fierce divinities, all placed in a mountainous landscape, in fine velvet mounting with central brocate door with deer emblem and a label attached to the upper border mentioning in dBu.med script its sequence:
1. (left 1st) Yama stands with his sister Yami on the bull, his right hand holding the khatvanga, the left pasha, his bull-head with fierce expression, the upper part with Dharmaraja flanked by Tsong.kha.pa and a disciple, the lower section with twelve divinities from his retinue
2. (left 2nd) Sri Devi seated astride her mule, her right hand holding khatvanga, the left kapala, flanked by Makaravaktra and Simhavaktra, the upper section with the central Sarasvati flanked by mahasiddhas and dGe.lugs.pa lamas, the lower part with the four season goddesses
3. (left 3rd) Vaishravana seated on his lion, his right hand holding the banner, his left the mongoose, wearing armour, the upper section with Vajrapani flanked by Prajnaparamita and a lama, surounded by his eight attendants, the lower right corner with perhaps the donors
4. (left 4th) He.la.'bar.ma seated on her mule, her right hand holding arrow, the left kalasha, wearing various garments, her face with serene expression, the upper section with Padmasambhava flanked by an emanation of her, Sitatara and four attendants, each riding a different animal
5. (right 1st) Sadbhujamahakala stands on Ganesha reclining on the lotus base, his six hands are holding karttrika, damaru, akshamala, trishula, pasha and kapala, the upper section with Vajradhara, flanked by two mahasiddhas and two dGe.lugs.pa lamas, the lower part with four divinities and Shri Devi
6. (right 2nd) Yama stands in pratyalidhasana on the bull, his four arms radiating around his body and the hands holding khadga, khatvanga, pasha and snake, flanked by two female attendants, the upper section with Vajradhara flanked by two dGe.lugs.pa lamas, the lower part with ten krodha divinities
7. (right 3rd) Vajrabhairava stands on Hindu deities reclining on a lotus, his thirty-six arms radiating around his body, each hand holding his specific attributes, the principle ones with karttrika and kapala and embracing his consort, his nine heads include a bull's face, the upper section with Manjushri flanked by two mahasidhas and two dGe.lugs.pa lamas, the lower part with twelve divinities
8. (right 4th) bSe'i.khrab.can is seated on his horse, holding khatvanga and pasha, while a spear rests against his shoulder, wearing armour and specific helmet, the upper section with Padmasambhava flanked by a pair of dGe.lugs.pa lamas, surrounded by the five Prin.la.kon.po guardian deities and the white Tsang.kar.po at the lower part
