A RARE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER
INCISED QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
The upper surface of the cover finely carved through the thick lacquer with two scholars standing in a fenced garden terrace in front of a pavilion and surrounded by ornamental rockwork, watching their attendant release a crane into the air, all against an intricate diaper-ground within a key-fret border, the vertical sides with composite floral medallions including narcissus, bamboo and lingzhi, peony, pinks, chrysanthemum, poppies, orchids, lotus and nandina berries divided by confronting bats on a key-fret ground, interior of the cover incised and gilded with the name of the box, fang he bao he, 'Releasing the Crane Treasure Box', and the base similarly incised with the reign mark (minor losses repaired)
