Lot Essay
Previously sold in these Rooms, 1 October 1991, lot 840.
No other vase of this rare form and small size appears to have been published. The vase is a miniature version of the more common Ming-style blue and white hu of this shape, such as the example included in the exhibition The Wonders of the Potter's Palette, Qing Ceramics form the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and illustrated in the Catalogue, 1984, col. pl. 63 (measuring 51 cm. high); and the example sold in these Rooms, 4 November 1996, lot 770. Since the size of the present vase is substantially reduced, several formal borders of decoration have been omitted and the handles have taken on a different form in order for the overall composition not to appear overly crowded.
