The pierced tri-lobed back hung with drapery swags and with ribbon-tied Prince-of-Wales feathers flanked by outswept arms and supports, the bowfronted seat upholstered in red silk damask, on tapering square legs joined by an H-stretcher (2)

Lot Essay

The design of these chairs corresponds to a pattern by Gillows included in the Estimate Sketch Book now preserved in the Westminster archives (reproduced in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, fig. 273). A set of four chairs with virtually identical chairbacks was sold by the Louise Benton Wagner Trust, in these Rooms, 13 April 2000, lot 199 ($42,300).
