Although Santi di Tito was known to employ an active studio, including his son Tiberio, the present composition, with notable pentimenti, shows a level of execution consistent with the paintings produced by this artist in the final years of his life. The Christ Child in the present painting can be compared favorably with the corresponding figure in a signed and dated work of 1601 (66 x 45in. 167.5 x 114.5cm.), sald at Sotheby's, New York, Jan. 11, 1990, lot 127.
