THE TERENCE J. FOX COLLECTION OF TEA EQUIPAGE
The following ten lots are from the Terence J. Fox Collection of tea equipage. The most extensive part of the collection, housed in Connecticut, was sold in its own catalogue at Christie's East, September 17, 1990. The following lots are outstanding items from the New York residence of Mr. Fox.
Terence J. Fox was formerly Chairman and founder of Iroquois Brands, Ltd., a manufacturer and marketer of teas and other specialty food products. Inspired by an exhibition of tea caddies at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Mr. Fox, with his curator Joyce Dickson, assembled a group of tea equipage which would represent the history of the celebrated drink. An expensive commodity in the 18th century, tea was stored and served in vessels equally precious, and the design and craftsmanship lavished on these objects displayed the status of their owners. The Terence J. Fox Collection is a tribute to Mr. Fox's connoisseurship and his desire to share the artistry of the past with others. The collection has travelled to a number of American museums and colleges, and was exhibited at Asprey's in London in 1988.
