Lot Essay

The arms are those of Bury quartering those of Moore, as borne by Charles William Bury, 1st Earl of Charleville, born in 1764. He sat as M.P. for Kilmallock 1789-1790 and 1791-1797. He married in 1798 Catherine Maria, widow of James Tisdall of co. Louth and long a leader in Dublin society. "Her manners were Irish, and not exactly the sort that pleased me, but after many years' acquaintance, the excellence of her heart, her sense, her wit and friendship, has completely attracted her to us" wrote Lady Sarah Lennox [Complete Peerage]. The Earl died in 1835.
