Lot Essay
The barque-rigged iron screw steamer India, 2290 tons, was laid down by Simons & Co. of Renfrew and purchased on the stocks by the Anchor Line in February 1869, as a replacement for their Hibernia lost the previous year. Operating first on Anchor's Glasgow-New York run from 1870-75, she then worked their Glasgow-Bombay service from 1875-79, having been fitted with new compound engines in 1877. Sailing whichever of her previous routes that trade dictated from 1880-83, she finally settled into a regular Glasgow-Mediterranean-New York- Glasgow service in 1884 which she maintained until sold for breaking up in 1894.
