Lot Essay

Cumbrae was a small iron coaster of 493 tons launched in 1882. Built by Dobie's of Glasgow for the Clyde Shipping Co., she was sold to the North Eastern Railway in 1899, possibly for use as a collier or bunker ship for their ferries. Subsequently becoming part of the L.N.E.R. fleet after the railway reorganisation in 1923, she was renamed SH3 in 1936 and was still in service when the railways were nationalised in 1948. She continued to work for the British Transport Commission for several years but was finally retired and broken up at Gateshead in 1955.
