Lot Essay

The Walenburgh, 880 tons and built at Rotterdam in 1764, was captained by Erasmus de Vries on her maiden voyage to China in 1765 during which she called at the Cape of Good Hope. Returning home in 1766, again via the Cape, she called there on her third voyage to China and stayed from February to April 1769. Her last voyage, under Captain Andries Brusse, came to a premature end when she ran ashore and was wrecked at Portsal, off the Brittany coast, on 12 January 1770.
