SMITH, JOSEPH, JR., Prophet of the Mormon Church. Document signed ("Joseph Smith Mayor"), n.p. [Nauvoo, Illinois], 10 April 1844. 1 page, an oblong, 55 x 200mm. (2 1/4 x 7 3/4 in.), in good condition.

The founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints signs a document in his civil capacity as Mayor of the largely Mormon settlement of Nauvoo, certifying that "Warren Smith has done duty one night as policeman...The City Treasurer will pay...one dollar for service as City watch..."

Joseph Smith (1805-1844) signed the present document just two months before his murder on 27 June 1844. Smith and his brother were imprisoned in Carthage, Illinois after destroying a printing press that had printed a newsheet critical of Smith and the Church. The two men were seized from the jail at Carthage, Illinois and murdered by an enraged mob.
