LITHOGRAPHED VALENTINE
A hand-coloured lithographed valentine card with an embossed paperlace border, possibly by Dobbs & Co, depicting a young lady in a country lane at the gate of a house with a church beyond, the printed verse encircled with a garland of hand-coloured flowers reads 'I nothing hear but, "Hearts to let"/Indeed I feel alarm'd/Less beaux should leave a timid maid/By bolder beauties charmed/Still one dear youth for my heart sighs/He said that he'd be true/If so, and honour prompts his words/He ne'er shall have to rue/Then here I place myself in sight/My cottage and some land/Relying on thy promises If faithful/-- here's my hand', 10 x 8in., c. 1840-50.
