Lot Essay

This pair of chairs, with Grecian-scrolled legs, arched and rounded 'tablet' cresting and deeply curved backs springing from voluted scrolls, corresponds to the form of a chair illustrated in an early 19th Century watercolour depicting one of the interiors of the Hermitage (T. Sokolova, Russian Furniture in the Hermitage, Leningrad, 1973, fig 107). A related set of four bergères from the collection of Rudolf Nureyev, was sold in these Rooms, 21 November 1995, lot 1137.
