Unsigned (Probably Nagoya or Gifu), Edo Period (Early/Mid-19th Century)
Katabori, kurogaki [black persimmon]; a compact model of a bat, its left wing folded in front of its body, its right wing at its side, the eyes inlaid in dark horn, the fur delicately incised in Nagoya or Gifu style, the himotoshi formed by a larger oval hole and a smaller round hole
1 7/8 x 1 1/8in. (4.7 x 2.9cm.)

Lot Essay

Although carved from kurogaki [black persimmon], the streaked dark timber more usually associated with netsuke from Iwami Province, this model is probably from Nagoya or Gifu.
