Lot Essay

The original Antique bronze is now in the Musei Capitolini in Rome. It was first recorded between 1165 and 1167 and became one of the most celebrated Antique bronzes during the Renaissance, with many of the leading sculptors making copies of it. Its popularity continued into the following centuries, reviving in particular with the Grand Tourists.
