Clarke et.al. state that Spencer began dealing in photographic materials from 1856 calling his business a 'wholesale photographic and stereoscopic depot' the following year. He opened new premises at 30 St Enoch Square in 1859 where he remained until 1865. In that year he moved to 39 Union Street and disappeared from from the Glasgow street directories in 1869.
