Lot Essay

Lamb studied under Augustus John at the Chelsea Art School which John and Orpen had founded in 1903. The artist frequently painted the John children and in the current work the sitter is Romilly John, Augustus and Dorelia's second child, who was born in 1906. Lamb was a favourite with the John boys because he willingly joined in their games.
