Dorothy Duveen, later the Hon. Dorothy Burns, was the only child of Joseph Duveen, later Lord Duveen of Millbank, and his wife, Elsie Salamon, the daughter of a New York tobacco merchant. Lord Duveen, the larger-than-life art dealer, went on to fund the extensions of the Millbank site of the Tate Gallery and the central sculpture galleries.
