EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son Hans Albert, n.p., n.d. [1940], two pages, 4°.

A detailed and intricate discussion of a problem involving the viscosity of liquids with suspended particles. Einstein comments that the main theme of his doctoral work was on this subject, and in a point-by-point dissection first establishes the approach to finding the coefficient of viscosity, and then considers the nub of the problem, 'why the process of agglomeration does not always take place'.

After Hans Albert's emigration to the United States in 1937, he continued a distinguished career in hydraulics and civil engineering which was to end with an international reputation and the professorship of civil engineering at Berkeley.
