3 volumes, 12° (178 x 99mm). (Lacking half-titles, and blank O4 at end of vol. II, vol. III with tear through bottom seven lines of H11, hole in I5 affecting one word of text recto and verso, quires I-K pulled, a little spotting in all three vols., occasional marginal tears and losses to corners.) Contemporary black straight-grained half morocco by Povey of Wotton, covers with roll-tool palmettes in blind, flat spine divided by multiple gilt fillets, title and volume numbers in gilt, ornaments in blind (joints cracked and worn, corners bumped). Provenance: Duke of Beaufort (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Composed at Chawton between February 1811 and June 1812, Mansfield Park was published the following year at the moderate price of 18 shillings in boards. Like Sense and Sensibility, it was published on commission, Jane Austen retaining the copyright to the work which was sold out by November. The edition was a modest one of 'probably about 1500 copies' (Keynes). Volumes I and III, printed by G. Sidney, are in Pica roman by Vincent Figgins; volume II, printed by C. Roworth, in Caslon Pica roman. John Murray, publisher of the second edition in 1816, '"expressed astonishment that so small an edition of such a work should have been sent into the world."'
