[AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817)]. Emma: A novel ... by the author of "Pride and Prejudice". London: John Murray, 1816.
3 volumes, 12° (176 x 95mm). Half-title in each volume. (Half-titles and titles in vols. I-II lightly spotted, quire H in vol. I waterstained, occasional light spotting and staining elsewhere, K9 of vol. II and C3, K5 of vol. III torn at lower margin, a few leaves lightly browned.) Contemporary black straight-grained half morocco by Povey of Wotton, with binder's label, covers with roll-tool palmettes in blind, flat spine divided by triple gilt fillets, title and volume numbers in gilt, ornaments in blind (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Duke of Beaufort (bookplate and signature on title or half-title of each volume).
FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE WITH THE RARE HALF-TITLE IN VOLUME I. Among the most accomplished of English novels, Emma was begun on 21 January 1814 and finished in a little over a year on 29 March 1815. However, the work, which was published at her own expense, encountered printing delays and advertisements did not appear for it until December, 1815. Volumes I-II were printed by C. Roworth in a Caslon Pica roman, volume III by J. Moyes in a slightly earlier version of the same type, and the edition was of 2000 copies issued in boards at 21 shillings. 1248 copies had been sold by October 1816 at the considerable profit to Jane Austen of £221.6.4 after payment of a 10 commission to John Murray. Keynes notes that 'the collation of the first volume ... is peculiar in that the first sheet consisted only of the title-page and the dedication to the Prince Regent, while the half-title was printed on the last leaf, which would otherwise have been blank.' Gilson A8; Keynes 8; Sadleir I, 62d. (3)
