A Continental gilt-metal striking table clock
Probably German. Late 16th Century
The case on large spreading gilt-metal repoussé foot with formal strapwork, fruit and foliage, supporting a short frieze cast in a similar manner and flanked by truncated columns with a drawer to the front, the side panels well cast with formal strapwork, flowers and fruit centred by a flower-filled urn and flanked by columns with heavy anthemion and floral decoration, the top with balustraded gallery surmounted by a later pierced bell dome, the dial now applied with a later narrow Roman chapter ring with original inner 13 to 24 ring, later blued steel hour and minute hands, front-swinging counterbalanced pendulum, the rear dial with later(?) twice 1 to 6 chapters centred by engraved foliage and with later blued steel hand, the movement with iron square-section pillars, the going train with spring barrel with iron caps, the escapement now replaced with tic-tac version, the strike train with countwheel planted on the backplate striking on a later bell above; now lacking the alarm train
