A German gilt-metal square striking table clock
Movement signed Stephano Scagviller, Venezia, circa 1850; dial and case German circa 1560/70
The case elaborately cast with a host of figures, each panel centred by an enthroned woman flanked by satyr caryatids on foliate pedestals within entwined vines inhabited with winged grotesque beasts, each corner cast with a figure of a satyr herm flanked by twin pierced roundels set with semi-naked figures in high relief resting on a wall and leaning on an amphora, some figures wearing a turban, the moulded base resting on four cherub head feet each with an engraved winged cherub to its reverse, the gilt dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring with hour and half-hour touchpieces, well pierced steel hour and minute hands, the later(?) centre engraved with formalised scrolling foliage, the spandrels cast as leaves and flowerheads with a cherub mask within formal scrolls, the associated movement with four vase-shaped pillars, going barrels for the going train, strike via countwheel on the backplate signed Stephano Scagviller Venezia, platform cylinder escapement: case circa 1570; dial circa 1570 with adaptations; movement second/third quarter 19th Century
