LENNOX, Charlotte (1720-1804). The Female Quixote; or, the Adventures of Arabella, London: for A. Millar, 1752.
2 volumes, 12°, titles with woodcut vignettes, woodcut decorations (occasional light spotting), contemporary calf (rebacked, rubbed and scuffed).
FIRST EDITION. The heroine of Charlotte Lennox's most important novel is Arabella, the daughter of a marquis, who grows up in a remote castle reading romances. While there are elements of parody in keeping with the spirit of Cervantes, the heroine's constant fear of ravishment also prefigures the 'Gothic' novel. Samuel Johnson contributed the dedication to the Earl of Middlesex, and the penultimate chapter, 'being in the Author's Opinion, the best Chapter in this History,' has also been attributed to him. The book has the added interest of having been printed by Samuel Richardson. Courtney and Smith, p. 38; Rothschild 1320. (2)
