LAVATER, Johann Kasper (1741-1801). Essays on Physiognomy, Designed to promote the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind. London: [vols.I & II] for John Stockdale, 1810 [vol.III] for Murray & Highley, 1798.
3 volumes in 5, 4° (332 x 266mm). 174 engraved portraits and plates, 2 by Blake, numerous engraved illustrations in the text, a few by Blake, half-titles. (Occasional very light discolouration and spotting.) Contemporary English red straight-grain morocco, gilt decoration in 3 panels of spines, 3 blindstamped borders round sides, the inner 2 separated by a gilt border composed of gilt rules and lines and a wide Greek key pattern, g.e. (a few light signs of wear, most sides slightly discoloured.
A reissue of volumes I & II and the FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of volume III. Lowndes calls this 'a sumptuous Edition, executed by, and under the inspection of, Thomas Holloway. The translation and engravings were under the superintendence of the celebrated H. Fuseli', but goes on to say 'some copies were subsequently issued with the name of Stockdale as publisher; these are inferior in impression to the first edition'. Lowndes 1321. (5)
