A fine late 19th-Century Russian surgical set,
signed Teplov of Tula, all the instruments with crome-plated chequered ebony handles, the majority stamped with the Russian Imperial Warrant and Cyrillic initials M.V.S.P.Z.Kh.I.. Comprising: a Bull-Dog artery forcep --5in. (13cm.) long, two curved [?]hernia needles, two straight wired serresfins, three jointed serresfins, a chain saw, a pair of late 18th-Century pattern Thomasin's bullet forceps, an [?]aneurysm ligature carrier -- 6¾in. (17.2cm.) long, a wooden speculum; a bistoury --11in. (28cm) long, two retractors --6¾in. (17.2cm.) long, a perforator --5½in. (14cm.) long, two pairs of forceps the larger with curved jaws, the internal jaws with short, sharp teeth for grasping --11in. (28cm.) long and 8¼in. (21cm.) long, three catheters the largest --11½in. (29.5cm.), a bow saw with two detachable blades --13in. (33cm.) long, and other instruments and accessories; with a subsidiary opthalmic surgery set, the instruments plated-crome with ivory handles and stamped in Cyrillic S.P.Z.Kh.I, comprising of a pair of curved scissors, four forceps, tenaculums, hooks, iris knives, an eye-retractor with tortoise-shell handle, a double-ended scoop and various needles, in a leather, purple plush-lined case --10½in.
