Lot Essay

Private Alfred John Channing first entered the French Theatre of War in late August 1914, while serving with the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Awarded Battle Honours for "Aisne 1914", "La Bassee 1914" and "Armentieres 1914", the Battalion sustained heavy casualties throughout the period August to November. Channing had been awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in the previous year.
