Lot Essay

Company Sergeant-Major William James was born in Atherly, Devon and enlisted in the Royal Engineers at Westminster in May 1869, aged 23 years. He subsequently served for 21 years with the Colours and was present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir during the Egypt operations of 1882. James, who went on to qualify as a 'very superior' photographer in August 1889, was finally discharged as a Colour Sergeant-Major in May 1890.
