Lot Essay

A.R.R.C. London Gazette 1.1.1918.

Sister Ethel Margaret Spicer, A.R.R.C., volunteered for overseas service in the Civilian Hospital Reserve at The London Hospital, Whitechapel on 12.8.1914 and was quickly employed at No. 4 General Hospital, B.E.F., having been disembarked in France just five days later. Apart from bouts of illness in 1916 and 1917, including appendicitis, she appears to have served continuously until being demobilised from No. 2 Stationary Hospital in May 1919, aged 41 years, her appointments in France having included No. 18 Casualty Clearing Station. Spicer appears to have taken up a position at St. George's Hospital in Canterbury, Kent, following her discharge.
