MISSAL, use of Passau. Missal. Augsburg: Erhard Ratdolt, 3 March 1503.
40 (249 x 186mm). WITH THE CANON PRINTED ON VELLUM. Collation: π8 Χ4 a-q8 r6 s4, κ1 [t]6 v-y8, A-P8 Q6. 33 lines and foliation. Printed in red and black. Large woodcut initial capital "T" on [t]1v, smaller block capitals printed in red and black, numerous Lombard capitals, recto of first leaf with large armorial woodcut delicately colored, a FULL-PAGE CRUCIFIXION WOODCUT (178 x 128 mm.) on inserted leaf preceding the Canon, delicately colored in a contemporary hand, large woodcut device at end. (One leaf of Calendar detached, a few minor marginal tears repaired, triangular chip cut from lower margin m8, corner R1 cut away, some marginal soiling in the Canon, a few minor wormholes). Contemporary German blind-stamped calf (rebacked, endleaves renewed, clasps and catches lacking). Provenance: Marginalia in an early hand -- Sam H. Saunders (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate).
Weale-Bohatta describes two Ratdolt editions of the same date, one of 368 ll. (766) and one of 320 ll. (767); the present conforms to the collation of neither. The book contains two additions: bound in between fols. CXXXIII and CXXXIII[I] are 32 leaves of chant printed in red and black, collating a-d8, but apparently not a part of Ratdolt's edition; the initial capitals employed strongly resemble those used by Petrus Liechstenstein. At the back are five leaves in manuscript bearing additional liturgical texts in a contemporary German hand. See Weale-Bohatta 766 & 767.
