A Lacquer Letter Case (Fubako)
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Decorated on the lid with a large Bugaku drum enclosed by cloth 'curtains,' maple trees and bands of clouds in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, silver and red lacquer, okibirame, togidashi and hirame on a mura-nashiji ground, the design continued to the sides; the interior also mura-nashiji with the addition of several gold lacquer maple leaves on the underside of the lid; fitted with silver cord attachments cast in the form of hollyhock crests (aoi-mon) and rings
