Circa 1750
Enamelled at the centre en camaïeu rose depicting the 'follies' at the mouth of the Pearl River near Canton, a band of gilt shell and scroll at the border, underside rim flake restored

Lot Essay

The 'folly-forts' or 'follies' were the fortified warehouses used by the European traders going in and out of Canton. A very similar plate is in the Metropolitan Museum, illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.23, fig.1.23; and by C. Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, New York, 1974, no.39, p.96.
