Qianlong (1736-95)
Enamelled with Paris seated below an apple tree offering the golden apple to Aphrodite, while her sisters Hera and Athena look on, beside a peacock and a small naked figure to one side, all within iron-red and gilt shell scroll at the border, underside rim chip

Lot Essay

This scene was most likely based on a print made after an original by Rubens. Many versions exist, differing in colour scheme, border design and the way the subjects are painted. Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, illustrate five such plates, including an example identical to the present as fig. 13.71, p.310.
