A FAMILLE ROSE MEISSEN-STYLE 'EUROPEAN-SUBJECT' PLATE
Circa 1740-50
Enamelled at the centre in a quatrefoil-shaped cartouche with a European gentleman in an interior setting, seated beside a table in front of a window, his left arm held out holding his empty drinking vessel, a barrel tipped to one side in front of him and his hat on the floor, within turquoise-blue enamel bands and gilt spearheads in the well and at the rim, minor underside rim chips
9 in. (23 cm.) diam.

A teapot stand with this unusual scene from the collection of A. Costa, Lisbon, is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.354, fig.15.40. A pair of very similar plates was sold Christie's, London, 13 May 1996, lot 207.
