A RARE SEPIA-DECORATED MYTHOLOGICAL PLATE
Circa 1740
Decorated in shades of sepia depicting the nymph Thetis stooping to dip the infant Achilles into the Styx accompanied by her attendants, an angel behind the group and at their side Vulcan carries a brazier of burning coals
8 7/8 in. (22.7 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This design is probably taken after a painting by Le Sueur. Compare the larger dish of this design, painted en grisaille, which is in the British Museum, illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, op.cit., Paris, 1986, p.300, fig.13.36.
