Circa 1745
Decorated en grisaille and in flesh tones with a man embracing a lady against a beer barrel, beside a circular wooden tub, below a band of spearheads and stylised foliage

Lot Essay

This scene is taken from an engraving by Le Mesle, illustrating the fable 'The Barrel' by La Fontaine. However in the original drawing, the lady's husband is inside the barrel, a detail the Chinese artist has omitted. A plate from this service is in the British Museum.
