A SWISS PEARL-SET VARI-COLOUR GOLD SINGING-BIRD BOX
possibly by the Rochat Brothers, Geneva, circa 1800/1820
Rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover, base and side panels engine-turned with a peaked pattern, within sablé borders applied with trailing foliage and flowers in four-colour gold, the cover centred by an oval hinged lid decorated with a bouquet of flowers in three-colour gold on a matted ground, surrounded by a split-pearl border, on release of the automaton with slide in the band, a colourful feathered bird rises out of the opening, moves the tail, wings and beak, whilst faintly singing; the associated silver-gilt key dye-stamped with flowers and foliage
