A SWISS GOLD BOÎTE-À-SURPRISE
Geneva, circa 1790/1800, struck with '14CT' in a rectangle
Octagonal box of slender form, the cover, sides, corners and base engine-turned with vertical bands of broad bands of horizontal reeding alternating with bands of narrow vertical reeding, within wavy and plain gold borders, the panel in the base sliding to the right in order to reveal a secret compartment in the base containing four thin circular tortoiseshell counters inlaid with playing cards in silver
